RIP Eight Belles

This Saturday was the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby.

I love horses and never cease to be amazed when I see them running. I followed Smarty Jones' career (as his home track was 10min from my house, he was quite the local celebrity). I rooted for Afleet Alex. I sobbed when Barbaro broke down at the Preakness (and again when he was put down after a valient fight for survival).

The tears are flowing again, this time for Eight Belles, the only filly (that's a GIRL horse for those who don't speak the language) in the race. In the 134 years of the Derby, only 38 fillies have competed and only 3 gals have ever run. It really is a boy's club!!

Eight Belles fought hard and came in 2nd....a very impressive feat. Then, only a moment later, she collapsed onto the track with 2 broken ankles. This is a very serious injury to horses and she had to be euthanized immediately.

RIP sweet girl. And say hi to Secretariat and Barbaro for us!!!
